Malaysia: 3G Network Shut Down by End of 2021
2020-10-19
On 13th October 2020, the Malaysian Government announced a National Digital Network Plan. The 3G networks will be shut down by the end of 2021 according to this plan.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has advised that they will no longer issue or renew certificates for 4G-capable mobile phones that do not support LTE voice (VoLTE) and 3G-only devices from 1st January 2021. After that, certificate holders will not be able to register IMEI numbers and product serial numbers for these devices under the self-labeling program.
The Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) will provide a form by which manufacturers can declare that their products support VoLTE and comply with IR.92. SIRIM will issue the updated Certificate of Conformity (CoC) upon receipt of the declaration. Certificates will be deemed invalid and the import will be prohibited if manufacturers are unable to provide evidence of conformity. The form has not yet been made public now.
Currently, Malaysia still supports 2G and has no plan to shut down this network.
