Malaysia - Update On the 3G Network Phased Out by the End of 2021
2020-11-16
Recently, the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) released more information on the phase-out of 3G networks. SIRIM has confirmed that for devices that only support 3G, no new registration of IMEI numbers or product serial numbers under the Self-Labelling Program will be allowed after December 31, 2020.
For all 3G devices or 4G devices that can only make calls through the mobile network but do not support VoLTE, the certificate of conformity or special approval certificate will expire on December 31, 2020. SIRIM will not accept new certification applications for devices that have 4G capabilities and can make calls over the mobile network but do not support VoLTE, but still allow them to register IMEI numbers.
For devices currently on the Malaysian market that support 4G and can support VoLTE, the manufacturer must now submit a declaration covering all models that include 4G and VoLTE functions. The deadline for submission of such declarations is November 30, 2020.
SIRIM has announced the interim approval between January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021. For this interim approval, devices that support 4G VoLTE only need to provide a 4G VoLTE statement, not a test report.
SIRIM has not announced the full details of the VoLTE test report, but it is expected to announce it in the first quarter of 2021.
