Brazil Updates Regulations on EMC Testing Procedure

The National Telecommunication Agency of Brazil (ANATEL) has published the Act №6.506/2018 that sets radiated emission and radiated immunity test procedures for Restricted Radiation Equipment.

ANATEL provided an explanation of this Act with regards to transmitter-receiver devices of restricted radiation in the official letter dated by November 7, 2018.According to the clarification, it is not required to test each transmission technology standard in the device with multiple operating modes. Only the most complex modulations with the largest bandwidth and speed are subject to testing.Let's see the following example to clarify the point:

For an RF device with IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, IEEE 802.15 and NFC technologies, where the device can operate at:

- Wifi 2.4 GHz 802.11b

- Wifi 2.4 GHz 802.11g

- Wifi 2.4 GHz 802.11n (20 MHz)

- Wifi 5 GHz 802.11a

- Wifi 5 GHz 802.11n (20 MHz)

- Wifi 5 GHz 802.11n (40 MHz)

- Wifi 5 GHz 802.11ac (80 MHz)

- 2.4 GHz BT

- 13.56 MHz (NFC)

to get access to the market of Brazil, manufacturers need to evaluate the following functions:

- 2.4 GHz: 802.11n (20 MHz)

- 5 GHz: 802.11 ac (80 MHz)

- 2.4 GHz: Bluetooth in the configuration with higher bandwidth and speed

- 13.56 MHz: NFC

Such method of evaluation allows to optimize the procedure and save time and material expenses.

It is also worth noting that the renewal procedure for the certificates that were issued prior to the Act 6506, doesn‘t require to meet the radiated emission and immunity limits specified in the Act.
