Egypt NTRA Announces Ban on Import and Type Approval of 3G-Only Devices

On September 1, 2025, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt officially issued a notice to manufacturers and importers of telecommunications equipment, announcing that starting from October 1, 2025, cellular devices operating solely on 3G technology will no longer be eligible for type approval or import.

Under the new regulation, the following two categories of devices will be prohibited from entering the Egyptian market:

1.Devices operating exclusively on 3G technology;

2.Devices operating on both 2G and 3G technologies.

Earlier, on August 26, 2025, the NTRA had sent an email to Group A laboratories instructing them to stop issuing VoC for cellular devices supporting up to 3G technology. It is worth noting that the new rule does not affect cellular devices supporting only 2G technology, or multi-generation devices such as those supporting 2G/3G/4G, 2G/3G/4G/5G, or 3G/4G/5G combinations. These devices are still eligible for type approval and import.
