Hong Kong Will Allocate 5G Spectrum for Free

According to reports, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government proposes to provide 5G spectrum resources to market operators free of charge.

The government plans to allocate 4,100 MHz of 26 GHz to 28 GHz spectrum resources to operators. These free spectrums will help operators to accelerate the deployment of 5G networks while reducing costs. Edward Yau Tang-wah, director of the Hong Kong Business and Economic Development Bureau, believes that timely deployment of 5G is conducive to the introduction of the Internet of Things, smart cities and other technology applications, thus achieving the government's ambitious goal of “building a smart city”. According to the proposal, operators that obtain spectrum assignments must set up at least 5,000 base stations in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government also plans to discuss the allocation of a total of 200 MHz spectrum resources in the 3.3 GHz and 4.9 GHz bands. Qiu Tenghua pointed out that the proposal may reduce consumer spending, but the price depends more on market competition and data usage.
