South Africa ICASA Plans To Shut Down 2G And 3G Networks
On May 28, 2024, the Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) issued Government Gazette No. 50725 on the subject of “NEXT-GENERATION RADIO FREQUENCY SPECTRUM POLICY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT”.
In the document, the authority provided preliminary dates for the sunset of 2G and 3G Networks.
(a) The prohibition of type approval of 2G and 3G only devices - September 30, 2024.
(b) The prohibition of activation of 2G and 3G only devices on networks - December 31, 2024.
(c) The commencement for the shutdown of 2G and 3G services - June 1, 2025.
(d) The total shutdown of 2G and 3G networks - December 31, 2027.
The sequencing for sunsetting of 2G and 3G networks and their related dates will be determined by the Authority subject to conducting an economic and regulatory impact assessment.
