Vietnam Postpones 2G Network Shutdown to October 2024
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) of Vietnam recently has postponed the 2G network shutdown by one month, moving the date from September 15 to October 15, 2024. This delay was formalized through Circular No. 10/2024/TT-BTTTT, which also suspended the implementation of the new 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency planning.
Despite the delay, the original 2G network shutdown strategy remains intact. GSM mobile networks operating in the 1710-1785 MHz, 1805-1880 MHz, 880-915 MHz, and 925-960 MHz frequency bands will cease providing services to 2G-only devices, with exceptions made for M2M (machine-to-machine) communications and devices in special areas in Vietnam. The phased shutdown will commence on October 15, 2024, with the complete cessation of 2G services set for September 15, 2026.
