Australia Published Cyber Security Rules for Smart Products

Following the release of the Cyber Security Act 2024 in December 2024, on March 4, 2025, the Australian Home Affairs Department issued the Cyber Security (Security Standards for Smart Devices) Rules 2025, which establish mandatory security standards for consumer-grade smart products.

This new rule specifies the following requirements:

·         Password requirements

·         Publication requirements for reporting security issues

·         Defined support period publication

Additionally, this new rule requires manufacturers to prepare a statement of compliance with the security standards for the relevant product.

This rule has a one-year transition period, after which manufacturers are required to ensure their products comply with the requirements of the rule.
