Eswatini ESCCOM Opens Public Consultation on 2G and 3G Networks Sunset
In November 2024, the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM), formerly known as the Swaziland Communications Commission, issued General Notice No. 12/2024 to initiate a public consultation on the accompanying Proposed Decision to Retire Legacy Mobile Network Technologies in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
The draft decision outlines a phased plan to retire legacy mobile networks in the Kingdom of Eswatini:
l 2G (Second Generation) mobile technology is proposed to be retired by December 31, 2026.
l 3G (Third Generation) mobile technology is proposed to be retired by December 31, 2028.
To facilitate this transition, the proposal includes a ban on the importation and type approval of 2G-only and 3G-only devices by December 31, 2024.
ESCCOM invites all stakeholders, including telecom operators, industry experts, and the general public, to submit their feedback and suggestions by December 9, 2024.
